At Hyde Eyecare, our Morristown eye professionals are committed to providing you with the highest standard of vision care. One eye condition we're seeing at an increasingly common rate in our office is that of computer vision syndrome—which often occurs among those who work desk jobs or otherwise spend a lot of time in front of a computer screen on a daily basis.
Some of the more common symptoms of computer vision syndrome include blurry vision, eye strain and discomfort, and headaches. If you're experiencing any of these symptoms, we recommend seeing our eye doctor right away.
The good news is that there are steps you can take to reduce computer eye strain, relieve symptoms, and protect your eyes. If you work at a computer for most of your day, one of the best things you can do is remember and follow the "20-20-20 rule." Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break from the screen and focus your eyes on a fixed object that's about 20 feet away. Doing this will help your eyes to re-focus and give them the break they need from a computer screen's blue light.
Speaking of your computer, you may also want to adjust your work area. Specifically, make sure your monitor is about 15-20 degrees lower than your eye level and that you have an anti-glare computer monitor. If not, you can purchase an inexpensive anti-glare screen to place over your existing monitor and achieve the same effect.
Finally, take the time to re-position any lighting around your computer so as to reduce glare. Ideally, you should utilize natural light while in front of the computer as much as possible.
